The English Language

The English Language. It is through this medium that everyone in Singapore, this cosmopolitan island, that everyone understands each other almost perfectly. You might suddenly wonder, "almost"?

It is true that most Singaporeans speak the English Language, but being totally in control, being fluent in the language itself, is a different story altogether. I daresay that most Singaporeans are in command of the language but being very fluent, I admit and would beg to differ.

The English Language is a globally known language and that I do believe that other than Mathematics and Science, English is also one of the factors that make the world go round. Without English, every homosapien would be speaking in their own individual native languages, creating a huge gap between every race, every religion. Perhaps that way, Singapore would be a state that I do not wish would happen. English is like the key to every door, irregardless of race, religion or other kinds of things that we humans follow. English is the medium we use to get to know one another.

Currently, in Singapore, we have our own unique language, or rather, a dialect of English I call it, more commonly known here, as "Singlish". Is it not unique? "Singapore English" the way the word actually goes by. It is when every sentence ends with a 'lah', 'leh', 'lor' and many more that I cannot really remember. Then, now you are thinking, "It's Singlish, you, a Singaporean do not speak that?". Not really, i do admit. Maybe when I'm speaking Mandarin, but not when I'm speaking English. I am not very sure why, but I guess i 'quitted' using Singlish long ago. Well, sort of, but really 'Singlish' is a rare kind of dialect i use nowadays. Ever since I was fifteen, i changed over to English instead.

I am not sure about this but, I do sometimes think that if I were to use 'Singlish' in say, the States or rather in the UK, is it not going to be kind of weird? I guess those English and British people would be laughing deep down inside, or rather cursing and swearing, for me insulting the beautiful English Language. I do not wish of that to happen but what do you know, I sincerely believe that having the ability to speak the English Language well and fluent is so 'cool'. Really! I adore those who speak the English Language with such vibrancy and eloquence, not forgetting the rombust and vigour. I really give kudos to these people for having such fluency that even I, the small fry, would want such ability.

Though I do admit that my dream, is to learn as many languages as possible but so far, I have not even learnt the other two national languages of Singapore and that, not yet mastered all of the foundation of the English Language as well as my mother tongue, Chinese. So, the Spanish Language, the French Language and the German Language just have to wait..
